What is Contrave?

Contrave is a combination medication containing naltrexone and bupropion, taken orally as a tablet. It is approved in Canada for chronic weight management in eligible adults and is thought to work on areas of the brain involved in appetite and cravings. Unlike GLP-1 medications, Contrave is not an injection. It is available in Ontario by prescription only and should be used under the supervision of a licensed physician as part of a plan that includes diet and lifestyle changes.

Who commonly uses Contrave?

Doctors On Site physicians commonly assess patients seen through our programs, including:

Adults seeking physician-supervised weight management Patients who prefer an oral (non-injection) option Those who experience appetite or craving challenges Patients combining treatment with diet and lifestyle changes

How does Contrave work?

Contrave combines two medications — naltrexone and bupropion — taken orally as a tablet. It is thought to act on areas of the brain involved in appetite and cravings. Unlike GLP-1 medications it is not an injection. It is used alongside diet and lifestyle changes, and a physician determines whether it is clinically appropriate for you.

Who may qualify?

  • Adults who meet the clinical criteria for chronic weight management
  • Patients who prefer an oral (non-injection) option and are assessed as suitable
  • Those without contraindications identified during the assessment
  • Patients who can commit to ongoing follow-up and monitoring
