What is ezetimibe?

Ezetimibe is a non-statin cholesterol-lowering medication. It works differently from statins by reducing how much cholesterol the gut absorbs from food. It is frequently combined with a statin to lower LDL cholesterol further, or used on its own when statins are not tolerated. It is taken as a daily tablet and is available in Ontario by prescription, under the supervision of a licensed physician.

Who commonly uses ezetimibe?

Doctors On Site physicians commonly assess patients seen through our programs, including:

High LDL cholesterol not controlled by a statin alone Statin intolerance Patients needing additional LDL lowering Elevated cardiovascular risk

How does ezetimibe work?

Ezetimibe reduces the absorption of cholesterol in the small intestine, which lowers the amount of cholesterol entering the bloodstream and helps reduce LDL cholesterol. Because it works by a different mechanism than statins, it can add further LDL lowering when used together. A physician determines whether it fits your treatment plan.

Who may qualify?

  • Adults needing additional cholesterol control or who cannot tolerate statins
  • Those willing to complete a physician assessment and bloodwork
  • Patients without contraindications identified during the assessment
  • Those who can attend appropriate follow-up
