What are statins?

Statins are a class of prescription medications that lower LDL ("bad") cholesterol. Rosuvastatin and atorvastatin are high-intensity statins commonly used to reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke, particularly in people with high cholesterol, diabetes, or established cardiovascular disease. They are taken as a daily tablet and are available in Ontario by prescription, under the supervision of a licensed physician.

Who commonly uses statins?

Doctors On Site physicians commonly assess patients seen through our programs, including:

High LDL cholesterol Diabetes with cardiovascular risk Established heart or vascular disease Family history of early heart disease Patients reducing overall cardiovascular risk

How do statins work?

Statins block an enzyme the liver uses to make cholesterol, which lowers LDL cholesterol in the blood and can stabilise plaque in the arteries. Lowering LDL reduces the risk of cardiovascular events for many patients. A physician decides which statin and dose is appropriate based on your cholesterol levels and overall risk, and arranges follow-up bloodwork.

Who may qualify?

  • Adults with high cholesterol or elevated cardiovascular risk
  • Those willing to complete a physician assessment and bloodwork
  • Patients without contraindications identified during the assessment
  • Those who can attend appropriate monitoring and follow-up
