Ezetimibe (Ezetrol) is a prescription cholesterol-lowering medication that is often used alongside a statin or when a statin alone is not enough or not tolerated. It is frequently combined with a statin to lower LDL cholesterol further, or used on its own when statins are not tolerated. It is taken as a daily tablet and is available in Ontario by prescription, under the supervision of a licensed physician.

Ezetimibe reduces the absorption of cholesterol in the small intestine, which lowers the amount of cholesterol entering the bloodstream and helps reduce LDL cholesterol. Because it works by a different mechanism than statins, it can add further LDL lowering when used together. A physician determines whether it fits your treatment plan.
