What are bisphosphonates?

Bisphosphonates are a class of medications that slow the breakdown of bone, helping to maintain or improve bone density and reduce the risk of fractures. Alendronate and risedronate are oral options usually taken weekly. They are commonly used for osteoporosis, particularly after a bone-density (DXA) scan or a fragility fracture. They are available in Ontario by prescription, under the supervision of a licensed physician.

Who commonly uses bisphosphonates?

Doctors On Site physicians commonly assess patients seen through our programs, including:

Osteoporosis or low bone density Previous fragility fracture Elevated fracture risk Long-term steroid use affecting bone Patients managing bone health after menopause

How do bisphosphonates work?

Bisphosphonates reduce the activity of cells that break down bone, which helps preserve bone density and strength over time and lowers the risk of fractures. They are taken on an empty stomach with specific instructions to protect the oesophagus. A physician determines whether treatment is appropriate, often alongside calcium and vitamin D, and arranges follow-up.

Who may qualify?

  • Adults with osteoporosis or high fracture risk
  • Those willing to complete a physician assessment, often with a DXA scan
  • Patients without contraindications identified during the assessment
  • Those who can follow dosing instructions and attend follow-up
