What is zoledronic acid?

Zoledronic acid is a bisphosphonate given by intravenous infusion, usually once a year. It is used for osteoporosis — particularly when oral bisphosphonates are not tolerated, not absorbed well, or not suitable. Because it is given as an infusion in a clinical setting, treatment is coordinated and monitored by a physician. It is available in Ontario by prescription.

Who commonly uses zoledronic acid?

Doctors On Site physicians commonly assess patients seen through our programs, including:

Osteoporosis where oral therapy is unsuitable Difficulty tolerating oral bisphosphonates High fracture risk Patients preferring a once-yearly option

How does zoledronic acid work?

Like other bisphosphonates, zoledronic acid slows the cells that break down bone, helping maintain bone density and reduce fracture risk. Given once yearly by infusion, it can be an option for patients who struggle with oral dosing. A physician assesses suitability, checks kidney function and calcium/vitamin D status, and coordinates the infusion and follow-up.

Who may qualify?

  • Adults with osteoporosis where an annual infusion is appropriate
  • Those willing to complete a physician assessment and any required tests
  • Patients without contraindications identified during the assessment
  • Those who can attend the infusion and follow-up
