Alendronate and risedronate are oral options usually taken weekly. They are commonly used for osteoporosis, particularly after a bone-density (DXA) scan or a fragility fracture. They are available in Ontario by prescription, under the supervision of a licensed physician.

They are taken on an empty stomach with specific instructions to protect the oesophagus. A physician determines whether treatment is appropriate, often alongside calcium and vitamin D, and arranges follow-up.
