What is birth control?

Birth control refers to methods used to prevent pregnancy. Hormonal options include the combined oral contraceptive pill, the progestin-only "mini-pill," the contraceptive patch, the vaginal ring, the injection, and hormonal intrauterine devices (IUDs). A non-hormonal copper IUD is also available. Many of these methods are also used to help regulate periods or manage symptoms such as heavy bleeding, acne, or symptoms related to PCOS or endometriosis. Most methods require a prescription; IUDs additionally require insertion by a clinician.

Who commonly uses birth control?

Doctors On Site physicians commonly assess patients seen through our programs, including:

Patients seeking reliable contraception Irregular or heavy menstrual periods Painful periods Acne with a hormonal pattern PCOS-related symptoms Perimenopausal symptom management

How does birth control work?

Hormonal methods work mainly by preventing ovulation, thickening cervical mucus to block sperm, and thinning the uterine lining. The copper IUD works without hormones by creating an environment that is not favourable to sperm and fertilisation. Which method fits best depends on your health history, preferences, and goals — a physician helps you weigh effectiveness, side effects, and any precautions.

Who may qualify?

  • Patients seeking contraception or cycle management
  • Those willing to complete a confidential assessment with a licensed physician
  • Patients without contraindications identified during the assessment
  • Those who can attend appropriate follow-up
