Forteo & Anabolic Bone Therapy in Ontario — Physician Assessment

Forteo (teriparatide) and Evenity (romosozumab) are bone-building ("anabolic") medications used for severe osteoporosis or very high fracture risk. Doctors On Site connects Ontario patients with licensed physicians who assess eligibility and, where clinically appropriate, prescribe or coordinate specialist care.

What are anabolic bone therapies?

Unlike medications that mainly slow bone breakdown, anabolic therapies help build new bone. Teriparatide (Forteo) is a daily injection, and romosozumab (Evenity) is a monthly injection; both are generally used for a defined period in patients with severe osteoporosis or very high fracture risk, often followed by another medication to maintain the gains. Because of how they are used and funded, treatment is carefully assessed and usually coordinated with specialist input. They are available in Ontario by prescription.

Who commonly uses anabolic bone therapy?

Doctors On Site physicians commonly assess patients seen through our programs, including:

Severe osteoporosis Very high fracture risk or multiple fractures Inadequate response to other osteoporosis treatments Patients needing bone-building rather than only anti-resorptive therapy

How do anabolic bone therapies work?

Teriparatide stimulates the formation of new bone, while romosozumab both increases bone formation and reduces bone breakdown. Both are used for a limited time to build bone density and reduce fracture risk, typically followed by a maintenance medication. A physician assesses suitability, reviews your history, and coordinates specialist care and follow-up where needed.

Who may qualify?

  • Adults with severe osteoporosis or very high fracture risk
  • Those who meet clinical criteria after a physician assessment
  • Patients without contraindications identified during the assessment
  • Those who can commit to scheduled injections and follow-up
