What is Prolia?

Prolia is a brand name for denosumab, a medication given as a subcutaneous injection twice a year (every six months). It is used for osteoporosis in patients at higher risk of fracture. Continuity is important with denosumab — stopping it without a plan can affect bone density — so treatment is coordinated and monitored by a physician. It is available in Ontario by prescription.

Who commonly uses Prolia?

Doctors On Site physicians commonly assess patients seen through our programs, including:

Osteoporosis with elevated fracture risk Patients unsuitable for or intolerant of bisphosphonates Reduced kidney function where bisphosphonates may not be appropriate Those preferring a twice-yearly injection

How does Prolia work?

Denosumab blocks a protein (RANK ligand) involved in the breakdown of bone, which helps increase bone density and reduce fracture risk. Because its effect reverses after stopping, physicians plan ongoing treatment carefully and arrange follow-up, usually with calcium and vitamin D. A physician determines whether it is appropriate for you.

Who may qualify?

  • Adults with osteoporosis at higher fracture risk
  • Those willing to commit to ongoing twice-yearly treatment and follow-up
  • Patients without contraindications identified during the assessment
  • Those who complete a physician assessment and any required tests
