Prolia (denosumab) is a prescription medication given as an injection every six months to treat osteoporosis and reduce fracture risk. Doctors On Site connects Ontario patients with licensed physicians who assess eligibility and, where clinically appropriate, prescribe and coordinate ongoing treatment.

It is used for osteoporosis in patients at higher risk of fracture. Continuity is important with denosumab — stopping it without a plan can affect bone density — so treatment is coordinated and monitored by a physician. It is available in Ontario by prescription.

Denosumab blocks a protein (RANK ligand) involved in the breakdown of bone, which helps increase bone density and reduce fracture risk. Because its effect reverses after stopping, physicians plan ongoing treatment carefully and arrange follow-up, usually with calcium and vitamin D. A physician determines whether it is appropriate for you.
